Photoaging

What is Photoaging?

Photoaging refers to skin damage that has been caused by sun exposure, specifically UVA and UVB rays, and can lead to skin cancers. Most of the skin changes that occur as we age are years of unprotected sun exposure is the main reason for changes to the skin often mistaken for just plain aging.

Photoaging happens on areas of the body which are most exposed to the sun, like your face, hands, and arms. The areas that are unexposed to the sun will face normal aging. The damage starts as early as when you are a teenager or you are in your twenties. However, normal aging cannot be stopped, but photo-aging can be prevented by taking simple care of yourself.

Skin consists of three layers: the epidermis, the dermis, and subcutaneous tissue. The dermis contains proteins including collagen, elastin and other important fibers that affect the skin’s strength and elasticity, and are responsible for skin’s smooth, youthful appearance. UV radiation (UVR) damages these important proteins, leading to photoaging.

UV radiations frequently damage the skin that causes visible sun spots and wrinkling linked with photo-aging. Signs of photo-aging also include freckles, dryness, leathery texture, discoloration and drooping skin in areas exposed to the sun. If you are worried about any possible signs of photo-aging, discuss them with a skin expert.

Here’s how Photoaging can be corrected

For all of us the thought of looking older is not a pleasant one, there are treatments in the field of dermatology that are available which to an extent even reverse the signs of Photoaging.

Procedures include:

  • IPL – Intense Pulsed Light is a light therapy technique that is effective in treating & diminishing the appearance of broken blood vessesls & uneven pigmentation over a series of sessions.
  • Photodynamic therapy-   It is a technique that involves applying a light-sensitizing medicine to the skin. Once the medication has penetrated the skin, the affected area is exposed to a light that activates the medication, promoting collagen growth that gives skin a more youthful skin & supple appearance.
  • Laser therapy- It can treat a variety of skin issues depending on the wavelength of light applied to the skin which are used for minimizing blood vessels, treating age spots, reducing wrinkles, removing hair, etc.
  • Microneedle RF- Microneedling RF energy heats the underlying layers, causing constriction and tightening of the skin, as well as the stimulation of collagen and elastin production.
