Skin protection in summers

Skin protection in summers

Summer season is in its peak and skin protection in summers are required against the heat and the sun. Exposure to sun certainly helps in healing certain diseases, it also allows vitamin D to bind calcium to the bones, but overexposure to sun and ultraviolet rays especially in summers can also be very harmful and the reason for sunburns, dehydration and even skin cancer. Just understand that there are tradeoffs to sun exposure. Every second you’re in the sun, it damages your skin and leads to wrinkles and a weathered appearance. In fact, nothing ages your skin more than sun exposure.

How to protect your skin?

Follow these and you’ll thank your younger-looking-self later!

Shade

Even you enjoy being outside you can still be in the shade. Carry an umbrella. Bring a cabana to the beach. Sit on the shady side of the table. Sit under a tree.

Cover Up!

Wear protective gears such as sunglasses, hat, cap or scarf to protect yourself from the aging effects of the sun.

Clothing

Clothes are one of the best means for protection against the sun. Wear clothing to protect exposed skin. Your feet are particularly vulnerable when exposed, so take care to cover them. Color, material and density of the weave of the cloth are some of the factors that affect the protection that clothes provide. Dark color clothing provides protection against UV whereas light colored clothing provides protection against infrared.

Hats

Hats are necessary in the sun. This might be one of the best things you can do to protect the sensitive skin of your face and neck–the same skin that is often exposed to the sun.

Sunscreen

Be aware of the areas that usually get the most sun so you can liberally apply sunscreen to these areas: the cheeks and nose, neck, shoulders, chest, calves, and tops of feet. Of course, any exposed skin should be protected. Apply sunscreen lotion before going into the sun, and use a liberal amount. Sunscreen also wears off, so reapply every 4 hours, or more often if in the water.

Choose right sunscreen for your skin-

SKIN COMPLEXION SUN’S EFFECT ON THE SKIN RECOMMENDED SPF
Very fair Burns easily, never tans 30-50+
Fair Burns easily, tans minimally 30-50+
Light Burns moderately, tans eventually 15-30
Medium Burns minimally, always tans well 6-15
Dark Rarely burns, tans readily 2-10
Very dark Never burns, becomes deeply pigmented 2-10

Summary

There are many reasons to go in the sun. It’s fun, and everyone else is doing it! Just realize there are consequences to getting sunlight; every second of sun exposure ages your skin and damages your eyes. But with a little knowledge about the sun, sunscreen, what to wear, and what to eat, you can better prepare yourself. For best results, apply these concepts year-round!

Oral sunscreen as a supplement

Sunscreen pills seem like a dream come true: After all, if 80% of the visible signs of aging stem from sun exposure, don’t that make a sunscreen pill the equivalent of slurping down an extension of your skin’s youth? Plus, with all of the concern in recent times regarding excessive exposure to chemicals in personal care and cosmetic products, using sunscreen pills could theoretically reduce the amount of sunscreen you need.
